His Cospas-Sarsat 406 MHz beacon was set off near Wisp Hill, New Zealand, and was the first alert received by the Rescue Coordination Centre.
The pilot of the agricultural spraying helicopter had crashed in rugged terrain and police say he is lucky to be alive.
Due to heavy fog and poor visibility Police and volunteer rescue teams responded to the 406 MHz beacon alert and thanks to its accuracy initiated a two-hour hike to reach the crash site.
They managed to find him “dazed but alert about six hours after the fact.”
