The man floated alone in the water for more than two hours after his boat struck a whale and sank.
He was able to activate his beacon and a search was launched involving a rescue helicopter, Queensland Water Police and Volunteer Marine Rescue.
The boater was found wearing a lifejacket with a flashing light, which was helpful to rescuers in locating him in the dark before dawn.
He was suffering from hypothermia, fatigue, and an injury to his upper left arm and rib area.
Local whale boat operators have been asked to keep an eye out to see if they see “any whale in serious trouble”.
