Four crew members were on a shrimp boat that sank in the Pamlico Sound of North Carolina Tuesday night for unknown reasons.
Officials received the vessel’s 406 EPIRB distress signal and quickly launched a helicopter and a motor lifeboat.
Two were rescued, suffering from hypothermia. The captain was given CPR, but was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The search continued for the two other crew members, but “this is a rough case and as we continue to search, our thoughts are with the families of the mariners”.
The SAR coordinator for the case said, “We’re grateful for the EPIRB that was activated during the case, which enabled us to get resources on-scene as quickly as possible. A properly registered EPIRB is a vital and highly-recommended piece of equipment for mariners to have on their vessels.”
