The family were on their way to enjoying a six-day camping trip when they heard a “thud” under their boat, and the boat was suddenly filling with squirting water.
“It probably took about 15 minutes for the boat to go under and roll over”.
The extended family included four small children, who were loaded into a hastily-inflated raft.
The family, some in and some out of the water waited for rescuers to respond to their 406 EPIRB signal.
The baby cried for about five minutes and then slept, and meanwhile as the family floated, a boater’s father noted that “we lost all the beer . . .”
Authorities credit them for their preparedness, saying “We’re very grateful that, for all the persons on board, there were life jackets for each person, suitable for them as well, and that they had a current, registered EPIRB.”
