Four people sailing in extremely rough conditions were forced to activate their Cospas-Sarsat distress beacon and escape to a life raft when their yacht struck a reef on a delivery route to Portland, Australia.
Poor weather prevented helicopters from launching so volunteers found the life raft with footprints around it, and located all four survivors in good health but with minor injuries a short time later.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is reminding sailors to take the weather into account and ensure they are well equipped with an EPIRB or emergency distress beacon for long journeys.
