The Royal New Zealand Air Force’s P-3K2 Orion aircraft took off from Auckland at 5am Tuesday to help locate a Norwegian sailor who set off his 406 beacon in the Pacific Ocean, 300km off the coast.
The vessel, which had suffered a mechanical failure, was buffeted by southwesterly swells of up to 3.5m and 20-knot winds.
“The Orion crew were able to establish communications with the skipper and he told them that he was safe and well but would like to evacuate from his sailboat.”
