22 kilometres north east of Townsville, Queensland, Australia, three men activated their EPIRB after their vessel experienced mechanical issues.
Up-to-date emergency contact details included the size of the vessel as well as the number of people on board, helping AMSA respond to the signal quickly.
As of next week, Australian beacon owners will be able to register their beacons online using a mobile phone or tablet via the AMSA website.
Proof of registration will also be easier with beacon owners able to show a registration confirmation on their mobile phone or tablet via SMS or email.
