The Story of the First Search and Rescue Event Assisted by the Cospas-Sarsat System
On 8 September 1982, a small Cessna aircraft crashed in the remote mountains of northern British Columbia. Fortunately, just days earlier the first Cospas satellite had begun operations. The survivors managed to recover their ELT beacon from the wreckage and set it up, sending out a signal of hope.
