Running out of rations after four days of trying to rescue himself on snowshoes, from deep snow drifts isolating him at Kia Ora Hut on the popular Overland Track in Cradle Mountain National Park, Tasmania, he “chose the right thing to do” according to police.
The rescue crew jumped out of the helicopter into knee-deep snow and waded through drifts that were waist deep at times before locating the unharmed man in the hut.
