A second-hand beacon in Holden Beach, North Carolina, USA was not updated by the new owner with its current registration information.
When the beacon was accidentally triggered, rescuers were not able to contact the new owner.
This triggered a search by the civilian Auxiliary of the Air Force to find the docked boat.
The rescuers treated the unnecessary search event as a training exercise, but there was a storm coming when they left the site.
