The 68-year old man had been living on and off the boat he built himself in 1985, and manoeuvered it between two islands near Miles Island, Western Australia, where he motored for hours fighting to hold his position.
The motor gave out and he was dragged onto the rocks, and activated his EPIRB when the mast broke.
He was grateful to the rescuers who helicoptered in to help him off the boat, without even getting his feet wet.
