  • 2024-01-03 | Rapid sinking of a lobster trapping vessel at North Rock – Bermuda Coral Reef

    A fishing vessel sank rapidly after encountering a rogue wave while maneuvering to haul lobster traps.

    A 406 EPIRB automated distress alert was received at RCC Bermuda from the 34-foot fishing vessel.

    The emergency contact confirmed that the vessel was offshore, but they were not sure where exactly.

    Other emergency contacts were not reachable.

    Attempts to reach the sunken vessel by VHF and cellphone were unsuccessful.

    Bermuda Radio issued a VHF broadcast at 12:13 on 23 December 2023.

    Two nearby fishing vessels responded and proceeded to the distress location.

    A small boat reported seeing a handheld flare, and the RCC watchkeeper also observed smoke from the flare with their binoculars but were unable to determine the exact flare position given the 8-12 foot seas.

    Two crew members were recovered from the water at 12:54.

    No medical attention was required.

  • 2023-11-27 | Hiker airlifted from Tararua Ranges after 406 beacon activated in New Zealand

    Police say a hiker rescued from the Tararua Ranges did everything right by using a 406 distress beacon.

    The hiker became lost during a solo hike meant to last several days.

    They were found by an Air Force helicopter near Mt Neil on Friday morning.

    Police said the person had a sleeping bag, 406 beacon and survival equipment which was crucial in getting them through the night.

    406 Beacons could be hired from many NZ DoC Visitor Centres or outdoor hiking and hunting stores for as low as $10, and once activated, the beacon would alert New Zealand’s Rescue Co-ordination Centre.

    “Let someone you trust, like family or friends, know where you are going and when you expect to be back”.

    Mobile phone coverage was not reliable in the back-country, so 406 distress beacons were essential, and hikers should know how to use them and they should be registered along with the user’s information with the NZ Rescue Coordination Centre.

    Even those who only planned a day trip should carry enough gear to stay safe in case the weather turns quickly or they became stuck.
